Emotional strength is essential in an ageless lifestyle.
Not only can emotional strength help decrease stress — supporting your ageless body — it also supports your total well-being.
In life we are always faced with challenges, but no matter the situation, what counts the most is how we decide to react.
Having emotional strength permits us to face our challenges with a certain resolve so that we can make thoughtful decisions instead of reacting frantically and out of character.
Here are 3 ways to increase your emotional strength:
1. Emotional strength is enhanced by self-awareness.
Self-awareness is the quality of knowing your thoughts and feelings. It’s also recognizing your strengths and weaknesses. With this knowledge, you are able to ‘see’ yourself — the things you are most proud of and the things you wish to improve.
Being aware of your accomplishments as well as your shortcomings is humbling and builds character which helps you create more emotional strength.
One way to practice self-awareness is to keep a journal of your thoughts and feelings. Having a daily or weekly account of your emotions and state of mind will keep you abreast of your life. In time, your emotional diary will reveal to you all the obstacles you overcame providing proof of your emotional strength.
2. Emotional strength deepens with self-acceptance.
While we strive to improve ourselves, underneath those efforts should exist a self-love — an acceptance of who we are already. Where we believe we are good loving people who deserve to be happy.
One way to practice self-acceptance is to acknowledge your feelings. Whatever the situation ask yourself, “How does this make me feel?”
Knowing and accepting your feelings will help you understand the gravity of the situation. Acknowledging your feelings also validates your own importance. That your feelings matter — especially in your eyes.
Allowing yourself to “feel the feelings” will help you build emotional strength and more self-love. This self-compassion is paramount when you want to experience a fuller and happier life.
3. Emotional strength is nurtured with consistent positive action.
In most cases we have a choice in which direction we can go. In all cases we have the option to respond with more dignity. With this type of attitude, no matter the situation — you will always find a way to react better.
With each decision to respond to life’s challenges in a more positive way, you develop emotional strength. As time goes on, you build a history of good choices and admirable conduct which creates a timeless life. A life that when remembered, is thought of fondly and where regret is rarely felt.
Your DAY 7 challenge:
When something bad, annoying, or inconvenient happens—instead of blindly reacting to it—use your emotional strength. Become aware, feel your feelings, and then choose to react in the most positive way you can.
When you start responding to your problems — big or small — in this way, you will truly be supporting your ageless lifestyle. Remember, an ageless lifestyle is about having optimal health, mind-body-spirit coherence, and exuding a timeless way of being.
When you exercise your emotional strength and have a positive reaction to problems, you are supporting your good health by being less stressed. When you ‘feel the feelings’ — that’s you helping your mind, body, and spirit communicate with each other. Finally, when you act in a positive manner that’s YOU being timeless — you deciding the best course of action for yourself at that moment.
Everyone is a “work-in-progress.” To accept this is to show kindness and understanding to ourselves. No one is perfect. No one has all the answers. We are all just trying to enjoy our journey the best way we know how and having emotional strength will help us do better.
