Day 14: My #1 Advice on How to Look and Feel Ageless

Welcome to my 14 Day Ageless Lifestyle Makeover Challenge series!

The purpose of the challenge was to inspire you to make easy changes that would create more health, vibrancy, confidence, and timelessness in your life.  It covered food, skin care, fashion style, fitness, and so much more! Each day touched on a topic that helped you be your best at any age.

Here are the 14 days worth of lessons:

The winner of the drawing has been chosen and notified. Thank you to everyone who participated. If you’re just discovering this challenge now—do it on you own and reap the benefits of a more ageless lifestyle!

My #1 advice to look and feel ageless is to always face your fears and heal your hurts.

Face your fears because that’s how you grow, expand, and become timeless. You move past your problems by addressing them — not by ignoring them. When you focus on your problems and solve them (as best you can) you become free of them leaving you less stressed and more able to enjoy life.

When you’re less stressed you have a more positive outlook on life which makes you look and feel happy. This contented state — your positive mindset — supports your mind, body, and spirit well-being helping you age better.

Heal your hurts, whether they be physical or mental because to have an ageless lifestyle you should be mostly pain-free — in every sense of the word. Take care of your physical pains as unchecked they will only worsen into chronic pain or disease. Heal your emotional pains because unchecked they will disrupt your peace of mind and happiness. Emotional issues may also manifest into physical pain and disease.

For example, I use to be afraid of public speaking. It wasn’t that long ago when I would be gripped with fear, anxiety, and feeling the physical effects of my nervousness — sweating, fidgeting, and having a sour stomach. Through therapy, motivational books, joining Toast Masters, and EFT, I overcame my fears. In doing so I improved my life course — I was able to become a successful health & wellness professional. I derive so much happiness and fulfillment from what I do that my health is positively affected with what’s called eustress — a kind of stress that’s good for you.

Another example is that I use to suffer chronic back pain for over 15 years. It’s only been the last five years that I’ve been mostly pain-free. I took charge of my healing—creating a holistic back-care system for myself—and in doing so assured my present and future self a more healthy and vibrant life.

Fear and pain—both emotional and physical—will prevent you from living your best life. You can’t ignore them or wish them away. Imagine if I had ignored my fears of public speaking or kept living with the back pain? I would not be the person I am today.

You have to face your problems and feel your “pain” to realize you were made strong enough to handle and heal them.

Nothing is put before anyone who doesn’t already have the means inside them to overcome it. (The strength and answers are within you)

Your DAY 14 challenge:

Use the life-tools and advice below to help you get past your fears, heal your pains, and live an ageless lifestyle.

  • Use Matrix Reimprinting to overcome past trauma and pain so that you can have freedom from your past and a better outlook on your future
  • Seek out help from a therapist or life-coach to deal with emotional pain and life issues so that you can live your purpose and achieve your dreams
  • Seek out a physical therapist, trainer, chiropractor, or massage therapist to help with physical pain so that you can move with ease at any age
  • Read books to help you become emotionally stronger so that you can handle anything that comes your way
  • Use crystals to boost your vibrational frequency to support your health and well-being
  • Move more — exercise, stretch, and be active — to support your health and well-being
  • Eat better — organic foods, grass-fed and pasture-raised meats and dairy — to support your health
  • Look to natural and holistic remedies for most health, skin, body, and mental issues (or in combination with traditional treatments)
  • Nurture a hobby that helps you relax and unwind to support mental and physical balance
  • Cultivate your curiosity and stay engaged with life to support your mental well-being
  • Meditate and pray often for total well-being
  • Get more rest and sleep because that just helps with everything 😉

The above practices, habits, and techniques are everything I do to support my ageless lifestyle. Every one of those points helps me in some way to overcome my fears and heal my pains so that yes, I can look and feel ageless, but more importantly — so I can live my best life at any age.

Day 13: Prevent Chronic Back Pain for an Ageless Body

Chronic back pain dampens your ageless lifestyle.

A few facts about back pain:

  • Americans spend at least $50 million dollars a year on back pain issues
  • 31 million Americans suffer low-back pain regularly
  • Back pain is one of the leading causes of why people miss work and go to the hospital
  • Experts claim 80% of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives.

Chronic back pain debilitates not only your back, but how you age and the quality of your life too.

As a former chronic back pain sufferer, I know the toll it takes on your physical, mental, and even spiritual states of being. When you are in constant pain — where it seems you have no control —  you can slip into a depression that affects your health and well-being. You look and feel older than you are, hopelessness consumes you, and you do not want to do anything anymore because everything hurts and you’re always irritated.

My Back Pain Story

My name is Jeanne Floresca and I have worked as a dance instructor, an elite trainer, a corrective exercise specialist, and Pilates professional.

Yet my adult life has been shadowed by a back injury I suffered in a traumatic car accident when I was 16.  I vividly remember how my body jack-knifed as the seat-belt pinned my mid section in place while the rest of my body flew forward.

Living with pain

The back pain did not manifest itself until I was 21.  I suffered sleepless nights, and tried prescription medication along with ice and heat treatments, but none of these remedies provided any lasting relief.

The pain drastically affected my mental state; there were times when I was too demoralized to venture outside for days.  In addition, I started to develop piriformis syndrome, another painful condition, through my years of work as a fitness instructor and dance teacher.

By the time I was in my early thirties, I felt as though I had the body of a senior citizen. I was constantly anxious about my future:  “If I feel like this now, how much worse will it be when I am in my 60s and 70s?”

The medical “solution”

My doctors and therapists addressed my issues in a “piecemeal” way, rather than addressing the underlying issue, so they failed to provide any long-term solutions.

My doctor prescribed pain medication and muscle relaxants, easing the pain without addressing the real problem.  My physical therapist would give me a series of stretches, with the goal of isolating the affected area.  While these stretches felt good initially, I would soon be suffering pain in new areas of my body.  Isolating the affected area simply led to another imbalance, so the pain would shift rather than disappear.

I was also suffering secondary health issues, seemingly not connected to my back pain.  As I realized that all these issues were linked, I was inspired to create my own holistic program, based on the premise that all muscles are inter-connected.

My holistic approach

According to this principle, our muscles work as a “family”.  Weakness or damage in one set of muscles will radiate throughout the family, particularly if one muscle group is overworked and under strain, or another group is under-utilized.

Since I began my holistic approach over five years ago, I have been 99% pain-free and the secondary health issues have been eliminated.  I nurture my back by following my program at least twice a week. I still experience occasional aches and pains which I can manage easily myself, and my quality of life has radically improved!

Your DAY 13 challenge:

Prevent future back pain by implementing some of my holistic back care approaches today.

  • Strengthen your core muscles: back, butt, abs, and stabilizing muscles in the pelvic-lumbo region
  • Strengthen and stabilize shoulder girdle muscles and region
  • Stretch tight muscles that contribute to your back pain
  • Strengthen weak muscles that contribute to your muscle imbalance and back pain
  • Improve your posture — standing tall and upright helps to distribute weight and work correctly to not over tax the back muscles
  • Avoid foods that can cause inflammation as this will worsen any back pain
  • Eat foods that are anti-inflammatory because it will minimize any back pain
  • Eat foods that support bone, muscle, connective tissue, and joint health for back and spine health
  • Heal any emotional issues that may be causing your physical back pain
  • Have an emergency pain protocol management system — a series of steps you do to give yourself fast relief

By adopting these holistic back-care practices you will prevent chronic back pain and support your ageless body.

Day 12: Age Well by Supporting Your Good Posture Today

Your posture is something you want on point now and in the future.

As we age a few inconvenient things start to happen. We start to lose muscle, bone density decreases, and our joints wear down. The effects of this decline is most apparent in our posture.

If I were to show you a picture of a woman hunched over as she walked, you would assume that she was older than she was because in our minds old people are the ones who are slumped over. If I asked you to visualize a slouchy, slow-moving, and unenergetic woman, you wouldn’t picture a vibrant and happy person — you would see a feeble and dejected person.

There is nothing wrong with aging or being sad. The first can be a beautiful process and a privilege that is not bestowed on everyone. The latter is part of life and our growth process.  If you are lucky to be blessed with old age, then let it be where you are independent, can walk and move with ease, and enjoy the adventures that are still ahead of you.

To ensure that you age well and maintain your good posture, keep up your muscle mass, preserve your bone density, and take care of your joints.

Your DAY 12 challenge:

If you have good posture to begin with, then keep it up by adopting the habits listed below. If your posture isn’t the greatest then work with a trainer, chiropractor, physical therapist, and / or take my Better Posture in 30 Days program to help you improve your posture and then adopt the habits below. Either way—today—do something to take care of your posture so that you will always look and feel energetic and capable.

  • Be aware of your posture and fix it — stand taller — when you remember.
  • Improve your core strength to support your posture.
  • Stretch your chest and neck muscles periodically to keep a balanced posture.
  • Text and read in good posture.
  • Sit in good posture when working at a desk or eating at the table.
  • Get 10 minutes of sun exposure a day without sunscreen for Vitamin D for bones and total good health. (Sunshine helps to balance circadian rhythms, hormones, and mood.)
  • Eat foods that help with cell and tissue repair and joint health.
  • Stay away from foods that cause inflammation and chronic pain.
  • Eat anti-inflammatory foods to prevent chronic pain and disease.
  • Find ways to manage stress to keep your body tension free to prevent chronic pain and disease.

Put in your mind that your posture is not some static unchanging thing. It’s constantly changing.

Poor standing and sitting habits, chronic physical pain (back, neck, shoulder, and so on…), uneven loads (like a heavy purse), and gravity are always affecting your posture — in a bad way. That’s why you need to keep doing things — stretching, realigning, and strengthening your muscles, getting enough vitamins, nutrients, and exercise (just enough) to support bone density and healthy joints so that you maintain your good posture and stay active and vibrant for the rest of your life.

You can prevent posture decline, muscle loss, bone loss, and joint deterioration by choosing to be proactive today.

Truth bomb: Bad posture will take away from the quality of your life.

From impeding your mobility to dampening your confidence — the effects of poor posture are real. If there is something you can do today to save yourself from that—make a timeless decision—and be preemptive. Let your future self say, “Thanks for taking care of our body — I’m still using it like a boss!”

Day 11: How to Create a Unique and Timeless Fashion Style

Timeless fashion is where you can express your personality, feelings, and freedom in what you wear.

Your timeless fashion sense is unique to you and as you grow, expand, and change as a person—getting a deeper understanding of yourself—so will your fashion style evolve. Your fashion approach then becomes timeless and time appropriate as it’s always displaying your true self at any given moment.

This confidence to express your true self through fashion or any other way such as your thoughts, words, and actions take cultivation, exploration, and time.

You need to cultivate who you are as a person. Learn your likes and dislikes. What makes you happy, sad, curious, mad, and so on… Discover what drives and excites you.

Then, you need to explore these different parts of you — these feelings and ideas that make you who you are. In regards to fashion, this would mean testing out different clothing until you find the “look” that feels just right.

You will know when you’ve found it because it will feel like what you’re wearing is just an  extension of you. Your clothes will no longer be something that covers, distracts, or takes away from people seeing the real you. Instead, your clothes will express and accentuate your inner beauty and confidence.

Finally, it all comes together in time and in this, a certain amount of faith must be had. You have to trust that you will figure out the right thing for you. That you will discover a style of your very own.

Your DAY 11 challenge:

You are going to cultivate, explore, and give yourself the time to discover your unique timeless fashion.

Here are ways to “cultivate & explore” your fashion style:

1. Write out what you would like your clothes to say about you.

Example things a person can say…

  • I want my clothes to show that I’m a professional, strong, and capable woman.
  • I want my clothes to show that I’m an independent, sexy, powerhouse.
  • I want my clothes to express that I’m a happy, fun, and easy-going person.

And with your timeless fashion sense — YOU could be all these things at one time or another. You are not one feeling, one thought, and one action — YOU are constantly evolving and so should your look.

2. Create a Pinterest board of clothes, styles, and looks that appeal to you.

3. Go through your wardrobe and spring clean — remove clothes that don’t support the “look” and feelings you want your clothes to convey.

4. Go try on clothes—be daring—try stuff you wouldn’t normally wear just to see how it makes you feel.

5. Start dressing “how you feel.”

Examples are:

If you’re feeling happy then wear clothes that mean “happiness” to you.

If you’re sad, you have two choices in what to wear: a) you can wear something that makes you feel protected and comfortable so you can get deep into feeling your feelings or b) you can perk yourself up by putting on something that will make you happy.

AND BOTH choices are fine. YOU choose the one that is right for you at that moment. Remember, timeless fashion is about having the freedom to express your feelings in what you’re wearing. It’s your body. Your choice. Your style.

Cultivating and exploring your timeless fashion is fun and totally part of your divine feminine. Give yourself the time to enjoy every minute of it! Dress up when you want. Dress down when want. Just dress to please YOU and you will get it right all the time.

If developing your own fashion style and discovering your grace and confidence is important to you, then I invite you to look at my How to Be Lovely and Ageless program. Inspired by the timeless Audrey Hepburn, it’s filled with thoughtful and helpful advice to cultivate your inner & outer beauty.

Day 10: Spring Clean to Usher in Your Ageless & Abundant Lifestyle

Spring cleaning is more than just about throwing out the old — it’s about making room for the new!

A little over 20 years ago one of my spiritual mentors taught me a simple technique to create more order in my life.  That technique in so many words was, An organized closet leads to a more well-ordered life.”

Since my learning of this simple life-tool I have done a type of “spring cleaning” which yes, involves the actual cleaning of my closet and house, but not for the purpose of having a clean home, but so that I could make room for more order in my life.

As the years went by I noticed another benefit from this “spiritual” spring cleaning — my life got better.

My life became more abundant from love to work; my situations became more prosperous. I then made the connection that through my spiritual spring cleaning, I must have told the universe, the powers at be, God—whoever was listening—that I was ready to let go of things that cluttered my life, that held me back from my potential, and that I was ready to make room for better things to come in.

Throughout our challenge you’ve been making timeless decisions to make your life healthier, happier, and better. What I’m sharing with you today is just one more tip to bring about the kind of life you want — in this case, ushering in a more ageless and abundant you!

So woman — it’s time to SPRING CLEAN!

  • Make room in your mind for a new way of thinking about health, fitness, beauty, and time with our ideas on what it is to have an ageless lifestyle.
  • Make room in your make-up drawer and self-care regiment for the natural products and methods that support your vibrant and ageless self.
  • Make room in your fridge and pantry for all the good organic food you want to eat that supports your health and long life.
  • Make room in your home and closet so you can create a sanctuary and a more authentic version of you. (And sister – next week we’re gonna talk about timeless fashion! Woot-woot!)

Your DAY 10 challenge:

Today, schedule a day or weekend to spring clean! I would suggest starting with your closet and work your way around your home. (How’s this weekend ma?! Get after it! 😉

In your attempt to clean you may come up to some resistance from your mind and body. Your mind may tell you, “you need this stuff”,”you never know'”, and “don’t be wasteful.” Your body might act lazy, fatigued, and even spontaneously give you a headache! But don’t let these deter you from your goal of spring cleaning to let more of your new ageless lifestyle in!

If these thoughts and aches arise — focus your mind to see the wonderful things that will come your way from this spiritual spring cleaning. If you can’t ‘visualize’ because you’re unsure of what your new ageless and abundant lifestyle will look like, make your body feel good by pumping yourself up to expect something good to come of out this spring cleaning!

Now that you are resolute — let’s make a spring cleaning action plan.  Whatever you choose to start with, whether it is your closet or the garage do the following 3 steps:

1. Make 3 piles of your stuff:

  • Pile A: Stuff you absolutely know you don’t need or want and will be donated or thrown.
  • Pile B: Stuff you’re not quite sure of and you will need to deliberate.
  • Pile C: Stuff you want and need.

2. Determine what to do with the B pile by asking yourself:

  • When was the last time I used this?
  • Does it support my new ageless lifestyle and timeless self?
  • Is this the best I think I could have?

3. If any of the answers to the above questions feel compelling enough for you to keep the item, then keep it. But perhaps you could also say these things to yourself and then decide:

  •  I will always have what I want when I need it.
  • The universe has better things in store for me.
  • I am ready to accept more abundance in my life.

These three steps will work for any situation when it comes to spring cleaning your home so that you may let more abundance in. Perhaps you too will do this for the next 20 years  and reflect sometime in the future on how your life was so amazingly impacted by such a simple life-tool.

Day 8: Drink These for Health, Beauty, and Long Life

Hydration is key for optimal health, longevity, and ageless beauty.

“*The human body is more than 60 percent water. Blood is 92 percent water, the brain and muscles are 75 percent water, and bones are about 22 percent water. *A human can survive for a month or more without eating food, but only a week or so without drinking water.” – WaterInfo.org

Why should you stay hydrated?

Water — and all liquids and foods that contain water — help your body to stay healthy. Water is needed for many body functions such as digestion, blood circulation, and regulating body temperature. Water is essential for cell, organ, and tissue health. Water protects your spinal cord and keeps your joints cushioned and lubricated.

At the onset, dehydration can lead to dry mouth, cramps, and dizziness. Prolonged dehydration can lead to disorientation, weakness, seizures, and even death.

Stay hydrated to maintain well-being.

  • Support cell, organ, and tissue health
  • Support spine and joint health
  • Support brain function and mental clarity
  • Support body functions like digestion and waste removal
  • Improve skin, hair, and nail appearance
  • Increase alertness and vitality
  • Increase longevity

The amount of water a person needs to stay sufficiently hydrated is different. The adage of 8 glasses a day doesn’t fit everyone. As a health & fitness professional I have generally advised others to drink when they are thirsty, but by the time most people realize they’re thirsty — they’re already dehydrated.

Now, I urge my clients to have water and these drinks listed below near them when they can. I tell them to sip water throughout the day, avoid the caffeinated drinks after 3pm, and to drink more when needed. For example, drink more often when it’s warm outside, you’re exercising, or feeling under the weather to aid in recovery.

Your DAY 8 challenge:

Drink more of the following…

1. Water for total body health and long life

2. Organic green tea or matcha for vitality and long life

Organic green tea or matcha (powdered) is high in antioxidants and flavinoids which help prevent cancer and age-related diseases. Several studies have found the particular antioxidants found in green tea helps to improve fat oxidation and prevent obesity, regulating fat metabolism. Green tea also helps in increasing exercise performance.

3. Organic kombucha for gut health and disease prevention

Kombucha is a type of tea made with yeast and bacteria. It helps to replenish the good bacteria — your gut flora — to help your body be more healthy and balanced. This bacteria found in the lining of your stomach helps with digestion, waste removal, boosts immune system, and may help with the prevention of certain diseases.  Much of the bacteria in your stomach only live for a few days and need to be replaced. Different kombuchas have different strains of bacteria — probiotics — drink them often and replenish your system.

4. Organic green vegetable juice for health and disease prevention

Juice (with pulp) ORGANIC green vegetables such as kale, spinach, celery, and collard greens to name a few. Juicing while keeping much of the pulp helps you get your vitamins and nutrients, including dietary fiber to improve digestion, waste removal, boost immune system, prevent disease, and premature aging. With juicing you can eat more vegetables and have a varied selection.

Make sure your vegetable juice tastes good to you and that your body reacts favorably. If your stomach is uncomfortable in any way from juicing try different vegetables or mixtures to create the blend that’s right for you. Listen to your body because it’s always giving you feedback!

5. Organic grass-fed kefir for gut health and disease prevention

Kefir made from grass-fed cows is a great source of good-gut bacteria (probiotics) which improves the  digestive system, gene health, and bolsters the immune system. Kefir is a great source of vitamins and electrolytes helping you to be healthy and hydrated promoting good skin and a healthy nervous system.

6. Organic grass-fed (beef) or pasture-raised (chicken) made bone broth for gut, tissue (skin and bones), and joint health

Bone broth provides you with collagen the main building block to bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and your skin. It has chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine aiding connective tissue health so you can move with ease. Bone broth has calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorous helping build sturdy bones to help you stand tall. It has glycine, proline, and arginine — amino acids that have anti-inflammatory effects keeping the body well and disease free.

This combo is meant to kick the immune system into gear when potential pathogens are lurking. Perfect for cold and flu season, but can be used any time of year, make this a go-to when your office-mate or children say they don’t feel well. Do watch out during the hotter months though, the combo of ginseng, ginger and pepper can be intense! Modify by adding watermelon juice.

2015-05-05 12.56.58Rejuvenate with yellow bell pepper, carrot, maca, celery, turmeric, yellow radish, Italian parsley, apple cider vinegar, multi-strain probiotics

Sometimes after a long weekend of over-indulging in rich food and drink you need a little something to avoid feeling sluggish come Monday morning. This little shot will stimulate digestion and support your healthy probiotic balance- the foundation of immunity. Helps keep skin from appearing dull and prevents under-eye fluid retention.

2015-05-05 13.00.17Revive with a shot of beet, lime, lemon & turmeric

Astringing and tonifying to keep it “tight”/hold it together… Meant to put a little pep in your step with turmeric, the combination of citrus with this colorful root are great gentle, daily detoxifiers. Great to enhance natural skin tone!

Day 7: Build Emotional Strength to Weather Any Storm

Emotional strength is essential in an ageless lifestyle.

Not only can emotional strength help decrease stress — supporting your ageless body — it also supports your total well-being.

In life we are always faced with challenges, but no matter the situation, what counts the most is how we decide to react.

Having emotional strength permits us to face our challenges with a certain resolve so that we can make thoughtful decisions instead of reacting frantically and out of character.

Here are 3 ways to increase your emotional strength:

1. Emotional strength is enhanced by self-awareness.

Self-awareness is the quality of knowing your thoughts and feelings. It’s also recognizing  your strengths and weaknesses. With this knowledge, you are able to ‘see’ yourself — the things you are most proud of and the things you wish to improve.

Being aware of your accomplishments as well as your shortcomings is humbling and builds character which helps you create more emotional strength.

One way to practice self-awareness is to keep a journal of your thoughts and feelings. Having a daily or weekly account of your emotions and state of mind will keep you abreast of your life. In time, your emotional diary will reveal to you all the obstacles you overcame providing proof of your emotional strength.

2. Emotional strength deepens with self-acceptance.

While we strive to improve ourselves, underneath those efforts should exist a self-love — an acceptance of who we are already. Where we believe we are good loving people who deserve to be happy.

One way to practice self-acceptance is to acknowledge your feelings.  Whatever the situation ask yourself, “How does this make me feel?”

Knowing and accepting your feelings will help you understand the gravity of the situation. Acknowledging your feelings also validates your own importance. That your feelings matter — especially in your eyes.

Allowing yourself to “feel the feelings” will help you build emotional strength and more self-love. This self-compassion is paramount when you want to experience a fuller and happier life.

3. Emotional strength is nurtured with consistent positive action.

In most cases we have a choice in which direction we can go. In all cases we have the option to respond with more dignity. With this type of attitude, no matter the situation — you will always find a way to react better.

With each decision to respond to life’s challenges in a more positive way, you develop emotional strength. As time goes on, you build a history of good choices and admirable conduct which creates a timeless life. A life that when remembered, is thought of fondly and where regret is rarely felt.

Your DAY 7 challenge:

When something bad, annoying, or inconvenient happens—instead of blindly reacting to it—use your emotional strength. Become aware, feel your feelings, and then choose to react in the most positive way you can.

When you start responding to your problems — big or small — in this way, you will truly be supporting your ageless lifestyle. Remember, an ageless lifestyle is about having optimal health, mind-body-spirit coherence, and exuding a timeless way of being.

When you exercise your emotional strength and have a positive reaction to problems, you are supporting your good health by being less stressed. When you ‘feel the feelings’ — that’s you helping your mind, body, and spirit communicate with each other. Finally, when you act in a positive manner that’s YOU being timeless — you deciding the best course of action for yourself at that moment.

Everyone is a “work-in-progress.” To accept this is to show kindness and understanding to ourselves. No one is perfect. No one has all the answers. We are all just trying to enjoy our journey the best way we know how and having emotional strength will help us do better.

Day 6: The #1 Exercise to Do for Women Over 30

Welcome to my 14 Day Ageless Lifestyle Makeover Challenge series!

The purpose of the challenge was to inspire you to make easy changes that would create more health, vibrancy, confidence, and timelessness in your life.  It covered food, skin care, fashion style, fitness, and so much more! Each day touched on a topic that helped you be your best at any age.

Every woman—especially if you’re over 30 years old—should be doing the Kegel exercise.

First, don’t be embarrassed if you don’t know what a Kegel is —  you are not alone.  Several of my male and female students have told me in the past that they don’t know what I’m talking about when I tell them to do a “Kegel” during their Pilates exercise.  Although it is an  important exercise, and yes to both sexes, it’s not something we naturally do.

The Kegel is an exercise to strengthen your PC muscles (pubococcygeus) also referred to as your pelvic floor or pelvic diaphragm named after its inventor, gynecologist Dr. Arnold Kegel.

labled_pelvic_floor_and_trunk2aThese muscles are located on the base of your pelvis ergo your “pelvic floor.” Imagine cupping your hand with the heel of your palm on your pubic bone and your fingers towards your sacrum and that is the region the Kegel exercise is targeting.

The exercise was discovered to treat urinary incontinence, aid in support of pregnancy and child-birth, reduce premature male ejaculation, and enhance sexual function in both sexes. A total of 25 million American men, women, young, and old have reported suffering from urinary incontinence (involuntary loss of bladder control).

“A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (March 18, 2008) reports that pelvic floor muscle training, in conjunction with bladder training, resolved the symptoms of urinary incontinence in women.”

Your DAY 6 Exercise:

Do your Kegels 1-3x a day for 30 – 60 seconds.

How to do Kegels

When you are first discovering this “area” of your body, it is best to start in a seated position. Find a comfortable place to sit and try to relax all the muscles in your body. Start with your feet and work your way up the body until you can feel loose and relaxed.

Next, visualize your pelvic floor, you may also gently cup or hover your hand around this area and begin by sending a message from your brain to this area with the command of “open and close”.

The act itself will feel like a quick isometric contraction and then a release of the muscles in this area.  It seems to be helpful when people are told, “it’s like you are trying to stop your pee midstream” and how would you tell your body to do that.

There are more complex ways to do your Kegel, some involving specially designed apparatuses, but studies have shown no conclusive data that the use of such equipment actually improve pelvic floor strength.  Once you have mastered the “open/close” exercise I have described, you can also improve the rate of speed at which you can do it and add other muscle groups in the region from your gluteus (butt) to your transverse abdominus (deep ab muscle) into the isometric contraction.

Why should you do the Kegel exercise?

I’m going to be super honest…

  • IF you don’t ever want to pee on yourself — when you laugh, sneeze, get surprised by being scared or excited — or have to wear Depends undergarments in the future THEN do your Kegels.
  • IF you want to be able to carry grocery bags, lift your kids and grand-kids in the air, move heavy things around, etc. — activities that need the support of your pelvic floor — THEN do your Kegels.
  • IF you want to enjoy sex fully into your old age — THEN do your Kegels.
  • IF you want your core strength back after having had children — THEN do your Kegels.

By doing the Kegel exercise you will increase the strength of your pelvic muscles, including other core muscles such as your abs and butt because they’re all connected.

With a stronger pelvic floor  you can prevent urinary incontinence,  improve sexual function, and build a more effective core that will support your Pilates practice or any movement format you like.

BTW – you could have done your Kegels while reading this post 😀
