Olive oil has long been recognized for its health benefits, but recently we have heard a lot more about the body and beauty benefits olive oil can offer. So many of the skin care and beauty products on the market cost a fortune and yet often use olive oil as a key ingredient, which is a very affordable ingredient.
The use of olive oil goes back to ancient Greece and it is considered one of the best kept beauty secrets. It offers a natural choice for skin care that is hypoallergencic and provides Vitamin A and Vitamin E, both powerful antioxidants.
Olive Oil Pampers Your Skin
Olive oil moisturizes your skin, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and helps to renew damaged skin.
Since 2008, I’ve used only olive-oil as my face and body moisturizer because of this, I believe my skin to be healthier, smoother, and firmer in comparison to when I was not using olive oil. (I also use olive oil in combination with other oils for my face and body such as Vitamin E, coconut, almond, and argan oil.)
Your skin cells are constantly being damaged by the sun, wind, make-up, and pollution. Using olive oil on your face feels like your nourishing and healing your skin cells. The antioxidants in olive oil also help fight free radicals which damage cells and are thought to be the cause of aging. It’s no wonder olive oil has earned the name “liquid gold.”
If your skin is dry, olive oil is a great choice because it can penetrate deep below the skin’s surface and nourish it. Olive oil provides a healthy alternative to soap, and commercial soaps that contain olive oil have a lower PH which benefits your skin.
Olive oil is a gentle way to remove make-up. Use a dab of oil on a cotton ball and wipe away eye-makeup or simply rub the oil on your eyes and face then wipe with a tissue. It will remove your eye-makeup while nourishing the sensitive skin around your eyes.
Olive oil contains polyphenols which are an anti-inflammatory with anti-aging qualities helping to decrease puffiness and fine wrinkles around the eyes.
Olive oil makes an excellent exfoliater. It costs nowhere near what a spa treatment costs, but offers the same benefits.
Mix ½ cup olive oil with 1 cup sugar. (You can adjust the consistency to what you like.)
Gently massage the mixture into your skin, rinse, and enjoy the glow.
Olive oil can also be used to get rid of chapped or dry lips just by dabbing a little oil right on to your lips. Many do not know that you can treat a sunburn with a mixture of equal parts of olive oil and water.
Olive Oil for Nail and Hair Beauty
You can also use olive oil to take care of your nails. In fact, professionals will tell you to apply a dab of olive oil on your dry nail polish to make your nails shine, soothe dry skin, and nourish the cuticle and nail bed.
If you have brittle nails soak your nails in a bowl of olive oil with a drop of lemon for 15 minutes daily.
If you want beautiful, healthy, and shiny hair, olive oil can give you that striking luster. Just add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to your regular conditioner and rinse.
You may also use olive oil as a deep conditioner. Simply add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to an egg yolk, beat, and apply to your hair. Leave on for 1-2 hours then rinse. (Double the ingredients for longer hair.)
